Biography
Elizabeth Isela Szekeresh is a playwright and solo performance artist. Elizabeth writes both multi-character and solo plays. Elizabeth is a founding member and current ensemble member of Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble in Santa Ana, CA. Elizabeth wrote a monologue for “Covid Monologues,” which was awarded “Best New Play” at the International Latino Book Awards (2023).
Elizabeth attended HBMG Foundation’s National Winter Playwrights Retreat (2019). Elizabeth’s solo play “La Chingada” was read at the Breath of Fire New Works Festival (2018). Her monologue “Bullet for your Kid” is part of the Code Red Playwrights collection. Elizabeth’s play “Paradigm” was part of the Frida Kahlo Theater 10 Minute Play Festival (2016). Her solo play “Paper Plastic Clothes” was part of UCR Segundo Jueves Latina/o Play Project (2015).
Elizabeth performed her solo play “Songleader Gone Bad!” nationally, including an excerpt as part of the 2013 SCRamble SCR Studio Series. An excerpt of “Songleader Gone Bad!” is published in the Journal of Mujeres en Letras y Cambio Social (Tiffany A. Lopez Ph.D, Editor).
Elizabeth co-wrote “The Mexican OC: Triumphs and Contributions of the Mexican American Community” a California Story Fund Grant through the California Council of Humanities (2006). Elizabeth was a member of the sketch comedy group PMS at CASA 0101 in Boyle Heights, CA (2003-2004). Elizabeth is also a filmmaker and her short film “It’s a Pleasure” was a finalist at the 2005 Moondance Film Festival. Elizabeth received a B.A. in Women’s Studies with an emphasis in Chicana / Latina Studies from University of California, Davis.
